TIP trials solar-powered refrigerated trailer

TIP is embarking on a 12-month trial in the UK of a zero-emission, battery and solar-powered transport refrigeration unit (TRU) that has been fitted to one of its refrigerated trailers (reefers).

The system being trialled has been manufactured by UK-based Sunswap and includes the installation of solar panels that have been fitted to the roof of the trailer to provide a solution that will power the trailer’s refrigeration unit emission free when combined with the TRU’s unique ‘modular battery’.

The TRU is fitted to a Chereau manufactured reefer that has had its specification optimised for efficiency, courtesy of Chereau UK distributor Reefer Trailer Centre. The trailer will operate as part of the fleet of a TIP customer on UK roads during the trial period, TIP’s objective being to establish that the zero emission TRU functions at least as effectively as if powered by diesel. Throughout the trial, TIP will be receiving regular ‘performance’ reports on the system’s performance.
